Orthodontist Recommended Snacks for Kids with Braces
Although an individual’s orthodontist is required to place restrictions on the foods he or she can consume, there are many healthy, orthodontic friendly snacks available.
Healthy snacks include:
Soft Fruits – the flesh of plums, peaches, oranges, tangerines, grapefruits, avocados, kiwis and bananas. Avoid fruits like strawberries, blackberries and raspberries as the seeds from these fruits could get caught in the braces and cause pain. Keep in mind that after eating citrus fruits you should rinse your mouth with water to keep the acid in these fruits from affecting your tooth enamel.
Not-So-Soft Fruits – raw apples and carrots are an acceptable snack as long as they are cut into very small pieces.
Steamed or Sautéed Vegetables – these vegetables include squash, zucchini, broccoli and cauliflower: All of which should be steamed or sautéed until they are soft. Remember to remove the seeds from the squash and zucchini before cooking them.
Soft, Low-Fat Cheeses with Crackers – choose soft cheeses like cottage cheese, feta and Brie. Cheese sticks are also a great on-the-go snack.
Low-Fat Yogurt – that does not contain seeded fruits such as strawberries, raspberries or blackberries.
Smoothies – Frozen smoothies are a great summertime snack. Smoothies are easy to make and there is an abundance of recipes available online. Remember which fruits to avoid when making your smoothies. Try using a straw or spoon as opposed to drinking directly from the cup.
