How to Be Done With Braces Sooner
Ask about AcceleDent.
While a lot of the ways to accelerate your treatment will have to do with common sense, technology and innovation plays can play a role here, too. One innovation that has wearers-of-braces cheering is the AcceleDent device. This hand-held device can be used at home, meaning you can continue your dental care outside of the orthodontist’s office. You simply insert the mouthpiece and gently bite down on it for twenty minutes a day. The device sends pulses of vibrations into your mouth, encouraging faster repositioning of the teeth. It doesn’t hurt; in fact, many patients report that the SoftPulse technology actually reduces their discomfort from the braces. Results from the AcceleDent are pretty astounding, as well: the AcceleDent device has been shown to move teeth as much as 50% faster as compared to patients who aren’t using this treatment at home. It’s safe, effective, and easy to use, so it’s definitely something you should talk to your orthodontist about using.
Follow all instructions exactly.
Your orthodontist will go over all of your care instructions with you before you leave the office with your braces for the first time. It’s important that you pay careful attention to these instructions and make notes if you need to do so. That’s because following those instructions carefully will help you speed up your treatment and make your braces more effective, whether you are wearing traditional metal braces, Incognito braces, or even Invisalign. For instance, when it comes to Invisalign, one of the most important instructions you’ll get from your orthodontist is how long you should wear your trays each day. Most orthodontists tell their patients to wear them between twenty and twenty-four hours a day, only taking them out for meals and cleaning. If you fail to follow that instruction and only keep them in for 18 hours a day, you are severely impeding the progress of straightening your teeth and will be in treatment for a much longer period of time. If for some reason the instructions you received weren’t clear or you need clarification, simply contact our San Francisco office and we’ll make sure you get the answers that you need.
Keep your braces clean.
Good hygiene is so important when wearing braces! That is true no matter what type of braces you are wearing. That’s because braces can keep food particles in close contact with your teeth for long periods of time if they aren’t properly cleaned. Sticky foods can get stuck in the wires and bracket, and all sorts of debris can be caught in an Invisalign tray if you don’t remove it while eating or rinse it and your mouth directly after. The problem isn’t just the embarrassment of having food caught in your teeth, either. Having food stuck in between and against teeth can feed the bacteria in your mouth, helping them grow and spread to create problems like cavities and gingivitis. Creating more dental health issues is a sure-fire way of slowing down the effectiveness of your teeth straightening treatment.
Stick to the recommended foods.
This could technically fit into the category of following all instructions, but the issue of eating and drinking with your braces is important enough to warrant it’s own category! That’s because eating the wrong things could really mess up your braces and cause you a lot of long-term problems, not to mention affect how quickly your braces will be able to straighten your teeth. Get a comprehensive list from your orthodontist about what you can and cannot eat with your particular type of braces. Some are more restrictive than others. For instance, when you first have either traditional metal or Incognito braces, you’ll want to stick to mostly very soft foods and a mainly liquid diet until your mouth begins to adjust. After that, you’ll want to avoid any foods that are hard or sticky. Sticky foods are problematic for cleanliness reasons; it can take forever to get all of the sticky substance off of the brackets and wires. Hard foods are an issue because they can dislodge or damage the braces, causing your teeth to move into the incorrect position. If you aren’t sure about a food, talk to our team first. We’ll be able to give you the thumbs up or the thumbs down or even offer advice about how to eat it, such as cutting it up.
Go to all of your appointments.
You’ll need to return to the orthodontist’s office regularly when wearing your braces. That’s because they will need to check on the position of your teeth and monitor your progress. During these visits, your orthodontist will evaluate your progress and decide how the treatment should proceed. That might mean tightening your wires, adjusting some brackets, or changing your trays. If these regular evaluations don’t happen because you miss your appointment, then you are essentially hitting the pause button on your treatment. That can set your teeth straightening progress back by weeks or even months! We know that life happens and sometimes emergencies come up, so missing an occasional appointment is understandable. But you should contact your orthodontist as soon as possible to reschedule the appointment at your earliest convenience. That ensures your treatment doesn’t get slowed down or your results aren’t diminished.
