Two of the most common questions asked by orthodontics patients are, “How can I reduce pain in my teeth while wearing braces?” and “How can I reduce the amount of time I need to wear braces?” While we’ve already answered the former in a previous blog, we’re here to answer the latter. In order to decrease the amount of time you need to wear braces, we use a device called AcceleDent. This device can decrease treatment time by around 38 to 50 percent, depending on the type of braces you have applied and your current condition. The great news is that it won’t add to any pain or discomfort you’re experiencing from braces, and may even make them more comfortable. Keep reading to learn how the process will work.
What is it?
AcceleDent is a simple and affordable device used to increase the rate of tooth movement in your mouth. It’s a class II FDA-approved device that uses cyclic forces and soft pulse technology to increase the rate of movement of your teeth by 50 percent. The device works with patients who have traditional metal brackets, Invisalign and clear braces. It’s also non-invasive, meaning no surgical procedure is necessary to gain the benefits of it; all it takes is 20 minutes each day.
How does it work?
Like a mouthguard, the AcceleDent device is placed in the mouth. The mouthpiece is attached to an activator that vibrates. The SoftPulse technology sends micropulses to your teeth that will accelerate tooth movement much faster than static pressure. The device exerts less force than an electric toothbrush, so you won’t have to worry your head getting jostled around while the device is active. If you use the device as instructed by your orthodontist, you will achieve the same results and have your braces removed in a shorter period of time.
There are two processes that occur when you have braces applied: leveling and aligning. Leveling is the process of bringing all your teeth to the same height while aligning means making them all facing the correct direction. Although the leveling process typically takes seven months, it takes five months on average with AcceleDent.
The AcceleDent Optima is one of the most advanced AcceleDent devices. It’s both lightweight and provides patients with a free AcceleDent app that will allow you to set daily treatment reminders as well as a calendar that shows your usage history. This connectivity is designed to help make AcceleDent a part of your daily life and help you get the most out of the device.
How is it used?
To use the AcceleDent device, start by plugging the mouthpiece into the activator. Turn on the activator and place the mouthpiece in your mouth. Bite down holding it in place with your teeth without touching the activator. Once it’s in, make sure that there is contact with each side of the mouthpiece for a full, continuous 20 minutes. Using the device for less than 20 minutes a day won’t allow you to achieve the full benefits while using it longer won’t necessarily help either. This device is great for multitaskers because you can still work or watch a show while you’re using it. Just be sure not to do anything physical that would disrupt the treatment in any way. The FastTrac report will actually show you your usage so you’ll be able to see if you were slacking at any point.
To charge the device, you’ll need to plug the activator into the wall once the LED starts flashing orange. The green light means it’s ready to go again. In order to clean the device, you’ll need to remove the mouthpiece and wash it with lukewarm water. If you want a more thorough cleaning, you can gently brush it with toothpaste or a gentle dish soap. Just make sure you don’t get the activator part wet because that’s not waterproof.
Is it safe to use?
One of the best parts of the AcceleDent device is that it’s non-invasive. There’s no need for complicated surgical procedures or adverse side-effects on your oral health. The AcceleDent is the simplest, most pain-free, and most cost-effective solution on the market to achieve accelerated tooth movement.
Who can use it?
AcceleDent works with most orthodontic appliances and with patients of all ages. The device can be used throughout the entire period that you or your child has braces on, so it’s never too early or too soon to start benefiting from it. If you think that AcceleDent would be a good option for you, talk to your orthodontist about it to see if you’d be a good candidate.
