Everyone has a preference when it comes to orthodontic care. Some prefer traditional braces, while others opt for Invisalign or clear ceramic braces. Another type of braces that are becoming more popular is something called incognito braces. These braces work very similarly to traditional braces only they’re set on the back of the teeth instead of the front like traditional braces. However, this can actually bring about some additional challenges as far as brushing and flossing is concerned. In this blog, we’re going to take a look at a few tips to help you get over this hump and start enjoying your Incognito braces.
Try Using A Threader
Contrary to the commonly held belief that it’s impossible to floss with traditional or Incognito braces, it’s actually not! One thing that makes this process a lot easier is something called a floss threader. A floss threader is like normal floss but it has a small, stiff plastic part on the end that makes it easier to get in between brackets and wires. If you use these, be sure to replace them every couple teeth so that you’re not getting bacteria back in between your teeth.
Try A Water Flosser
Let me start off by saying that a water flosser should never be a replacement for actually flossing. With that being said, it can still be beneficial if you want a quick way of cleaning between your teeth and don’t have a toothpick or floss on hand. Water flossers basically just spray a small stream of water at a high speed to get in between the teeth.
Use A Quality Mouthwash
Once again, mouthwash is no replacement for actual floss, but it can help if you’re short on time. Be sure to avoid mouthwash with alcohol or any other ingredient that could harm your teeth, and don’t overdo it. Even a small amount of mouthwash will do the trick and you can even mix it with a little bit of water if it’s too strong for you.
Use An Interproximal Brush
Interproximal brushes can be used in place of floss to remove bacteria from behind arch wires. These are great for using after a meal because they don’t just move food particles around in your mouth, they remove them.
The number one rule of flossing with either Incognito braces or traditional braces is to be patient and never fall behind on your oral hygiene routine. Although it is certainly more difficult to floss with braces on, it doesn’t mean you should be doing it less frequently or not doing a good job. And the more you practice, the better you get, so be patient!
