Many parents wonder how their son or daughter will react to braces. Will they be able to concentrate on their studies? Will their braces prevent them from doing things like love like sports or hobbies? Will they avoid being in photos while braces are on? Will it be worth the cost? These are all legitimate questions that you may be asking, but one thing many people don’t consider is how they can go on vacation if their son or daughter has braces. Although it’s not too complicated or different from what you do at home, there are several precautions you might want to take. Keep reading to learn more.

Schedule an appointment

One helpful tip for traveling with braces is to simply keep your orthodontist informed and schedule an extra check-up before you leave if he or she deems it necessary. Remember that your appointments with your orthodontist are an important part of your progress. Patients who schedule check-ups more frequently or right after experiencing an issue with their braces will ultimately get their braces off sooner and how lower costs at the end of the day.

But even if you don’t notice any issues with the braces or your teeth, it’s important that your orthodontist is able to see your progress and pinpoint anything that could improve. If you’re going on a long vacation, you’ll want to schedule your appointment as close as possible to the day that you leave, and before you leave, be sure to ask what you can be doing to speed along the process while you’re on vacation.

Make a travel kit

You need to make sure you’re prepared to take care of your braces when you’re gone, and depending on the type of braces you have, you may need to bring different things. Make sure you bring a floss threader if you find it difficult to floss in between your braces. And if you’re wearing traditional braces, you may need to bring some orthodontic wax in case they start poking you. This is important because you may not be able to find orthodontic wax wherever you’re going. If you wear Invisalign, make sure to bring your case and any spare aligners you have.

As far as cleaning is concerned, you’ll want to bring your toothbrush, a good amount of floss, and some mini brushes that can help you clean in between each bracket. You might also consider bringing some pain medication in case the orthodontic wax doesn’t cut it for you.
