Invisalign: Orthodontic Alternative

Hello, and welcome back to our blog! At Camilo Riaño Orthodontics, we are smile architects. We have made it our mission to provide as many San Francisco area residents with the orthodontic care that they need in order to achieve their perfect smile. Traditionally, when people would come to us for their orthodontic needs, they would simply have braces applied to their teeth. While braces are an effective method for straightening a person’s teeth, technology has evolved, providing people with more options when it comes to orthodontic hardware. In today’s post, we are going to go over our Invisalign products, an orthodontic option that has allowed hundreds of our patients to achieve the smile that they want without having to deal with the inconveniences of metal braces. Invisalign is a New Orthodontic Treatment

Chances are good that everyone who is reading this blog has heard of Invisalign. Created in the late 90s by Zia Chishti and Kelsey Wirth in San Jose, California as an alternative to traditional braces, Align Technology, the parent company that produces Invisalign products, employs over 3,000 people and has an annual revenue of approximately $560 million. The inspiration for Invisalign came from Chishti who, at the time, was an adult orthodontic patient. After looking at the clear retainer that he was given once his braces were taken off, he realized that using retainers such as these could work for the entire orthodontic procedure. After Chishti teamed up with Wirth, they began to look for developers for their new product at Stanford University, the university that they both attended. Teaming up with Apostolos Lerios and Brian Freyburger, the four founded Align Technology and began to produce Invisalign out of their garage in Menlo Park, California. After multiple prototypes, the team came up with their final product. Utilizing advanced CAD modeling and 3D printing technology, they developed incremental retainers that were able to perform the same duties as normal braces.

When first introduced, many dentists and orthodontists were skeptical of the efficacy of Invisalign products dues largely to the fact that this method of orthodontic treatment was such a far departure from the traditional methods used to straighten people’s teeth. To bring Invisalign to the attention of mainstream consumers, the founders of Align Technology launched a $31 million advertising campaign on television, a move that the New York Times dubbed the “most aggressive consumer advertising plan the dental profession has ever seen.” By the end of 2000, 75 percent of all orthodontists in the country were trained on how to use Invisalign systems.
