Straighten Your Teeth With Invisalign

Hello, and welcome back to the Camilo Riaño Orthodontics blog! If you are just now joining us, we are beginning the second entry in our short blog series centering around Invisalign invisible braces. Through our years of serving the San Francisco community, we have helped thousands of people achieve their perfect smile. Teeth that are crooked or misaligned are not just a cosmetic eyesore, they can also make cleaning and taking care of the teeth difficult. Bacteria loves to cling to surfaces of the teeth that are hard to reach, such as the spaces in between teeth. If these spaces are not properly cleaned, periodontal disease and tooth decay can take hold, compromising the health and integrity of the teeth and gums. To remedy this, braces were invented in order to straighten the teeth and reduce the amount of hard to reach spaces. However, traditional braces are not always the most attractive orthodontic option. For this reason, we offer Invisalign systems to both adult and teen patients at our clinic to provide them with a straightening solution that does not affect the appearance of the mouth. In today’s post, we are going to list out some of the benefits that come along with Invisalign and why they should be considered as an orthodontic option.

Benefit 1: Appearance

When you picture braces in your mind’s eye, you probably imagine metal brackets, wires, rubber bands, and all of the other traditional components of braces. While many advancements have been made over the years to improve the appearance of braces and make them more comfortable for the wearer, there is only so much that can be done to make a bunch of metal look good. With Invisalign, all worry associated with cosmetic appearance is taken away. The clear plastic trays are nearly invisible to a casual observer and, in many cases, our patients report that they sometimes forget they even have them on. Invisalign will not make your mouth appear puffy like traditional braces and, even better, there is no chance that you will come home only to realize that you have had remnants of your lunch stuck in your brackets all day.

Benefit 2: Length of Treatment

One of the worst aspects of having orthodontic work done is the simple fact that it takes a while to see results. While it is possible to move all of a person’s teeth into the correct position at once, there are a few factors that keep this from being a viable option. First, moving someone’s teeth at the same time into the correct position would be extremely uncomfortable. Second, repositioning a person’s teeth too fast can lead to damage of the teeth’s root system, an outcome that should be avoided at all costs. As a result of these two factors, the average time that a person must wear braces is right around two years. This may not seem like that long of a time when the end result is perfectly straight teeth; however, two years of metal in your mouth can feel like an eternity. Invisalign, on the other hand, typically takes around a year to a year and a half to straighten a patient’s teeth.

Benefit 3: Comfort

One of the worst things about traditional braces is the fact that they are uncomfortable. Even though modern braces are much more comfortable than the first generation of braces, there is only so much that can be done to make a bunch of metal comfortable. For the most part, people have an adjustment period when the braces cause some irritation and then they become used to the brackets and wires. Unfortunately, each new adjustment slightly moves the wires and brackets, meaning that a patient’s mouth has to work all over again to get used to the irritation. Invisalign clear braces take comfort to a new level. Not only are the braces made from smooth plastic, meaning that they will not cause irritation to the inside of the mouth, but they can also be removed for brief periods of time so that the patient can eat and drink.

Benefit 4: No Surprises

When a patient has traditional braces placed on their teeth, there is a little bit of mystery surrounding the entire process. The orthodontist will give an estimation of how long the treatments should last but, in reality, there is a little bit of guesswork on the part of the orthodontist. With Invisalign, the patient knows exactly what to expect and how long the orthodontic treatment will last. Because the Invisalign trains are modeled on a computer, the treatment plan is known ahead of time by both the patient and the orthodontist. Each tray is designed to be worn for a certain amount of time, meaning that you will know exactly how long your treatment period will last as long as the treatment plan is followed.

Benefit 5: Safety

As we mentioned earlier, traditional braces can be rather uncomfortable. While this irritation is something that most people just have to deal with, it can also be a bit of a safety issue. Metal wires from traditional braces can puncture and scratch the insides of the mouth and gums, leading to infection if not treated properly. Invisalign clear braces pose no such risk because they are made from a smooth plastic with no sharp edges that is precisely shaped to match your teeth. This means that there is basically zero risk of injury when it comes to wearing Invisalign.
