If your son or daughter needs braces soon, you’ve probably been scouring the internet trying to find the best type of braces for their lifestyle, and more importantly, the orthodontist that you’ll be visiting. There’s a lot to take into consideration like how much they will cost, how much pain or soreness they will cause, how they look, how long it will take before getting them off, and how easy they are to maintain. In this blog, we’re going to cover some of the main reasons Invisalign is a great option for teens with a busy lifestyle. If you still have questions about Invisalign, be sure to contact your Top Rated Local® San Francisco Orthodontists at Camilo Riano Orthodontics to schedule an appointment.

Invisalign Vs. Invisalign Teen

First of all, it should be noted that there is a difference between Invisalign and Invisalign Teen. The standard Invisalign technology that’s used in orthodontist offices across the United States was introduced in the 90s. Let’s take a look at some of the differences between the two so that you can see why Invisalign Teen would be a great option for your son or daughter.

Invisalign is an aligner that is custom-made for the patient’s teeth. It is interchanged every several weeks for a total of around eight weeks depending on how misaligned the teeth are. Like a retainer, Invisalign is placed around the teeth and can be removed for eating and cleaning, however, it is recommended by most orthodontists to keep it in as often as possible to keep the process moving along. The clear aligner is created from a computer generated mould and fitted by your orthodontist.

Invisalign Teen offers several benefits that traditional Invisalign does not.

Extra aligners

Teens with an active life probably don’t have their orthodontic treatment at the forefront of their minds. They’re spending more time developing friendships, learning, and simply having fun. That’s why Invisalign Teen offers additional aligners in case they lose one or misplace it.

Room for molars

A teens mouth is not the same as an adult’s mouth. As an adult, your gums, jawbone, and teeth have settled into the position that they will be in for the rest of your life (assuming you maintain your oral hygiene). However, a teen’s mouth is constantly adjusting to make room for molars. Invisalign Teen has design features that accommodate for this difference.

This type of Invisalign has something called eruption tabs that are built into the mould and allows erupting molars to be guided into place as they grow in. With standard Invisalign, molars could end up causing significant issues for a patient’s orthodontic treatment because they’re not getting aligned like the rest of your teeth.

Usage indicators

Like we mentioned before, your teen has a lot going on in their lives so it can be difficult for them to manage their orthodontic treatment. Since traditional braces never leave a patient’s teeth until the teeth are fully aligned, there’s more of a concern of whether the patient is brushing and flossing their teeth regularly. However, with Invisalign, the concern is that patients may not be putting their aligners back in after brushing or eating. Many patients leave them out because of the relief it causes or simply forgetting to put them back in.

When you take your son or daughter into the orthodontist, usage indicators will allow your orthodontist to see if they have been wearing their aligners enough. On every pair of Invisalign Teen aligners, there is a blue usage indicator that will fade if the patient has been wearing them enough.

Power ridges

Invisalign aligners contain a feature called power ridges that are used to put force on a tooth in a specific area. These ridges can be used to adjust the patient’s front teeth so that they’re tilted vertically rather than pointing outwards or inwards. This is an issue that many teens experience because their teeth may be overcrowded or undercrowded in their mouth. Not only does this make eating and speaking difficult, but it can lead to more serious issues like bone loss (resorption) in the jaw as the teeth become further and further misaligned.

These are just a few of the key differences between standard Invisalign and Invisalign Teen treatments. In our next blog, we’ll take a look at some more specific benefits active teens will experience with Invisalign Teen.
