Typically, we associate braces and orthodontics with teenagers, because most people choose to have braces applied during this point in their lives. However, does this mean our teenage years are the only time we can or should get braces? Not necessarily. Although we don’t tend to see many adults walking around with braces, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t. In this blog, we’re going to take a look at several things to consider before giving up on the prospect of adult braces.
Age Doesn’t Affect Much
Although there are several oral health conditions that could impact your decision to get braces as an adult, your age won’t have much of an effect on how effective braces are at aligning your teeth. Braces work the same way for adults as they do teens and you’ll have the same treatment options available to you. Many orthodontists offer treatment for adults and will take into consideration your whole oral health history to decide what’s best for you.
You’re Not Alone
There’s no doubt about it, getting braces as an adult is a much different experience than getting them when you were a kid. Although, as teens, we act like it’s the end of the world getting braces, we soon realize that everyone around us is getting them too. As a result, we may feel more out of place getting braces as an adult. The good news is that there are other people out there with braces, but they’ve most likely opted for invisible options such as incognito braces, clear ceramic braces, or Invisalign.
The Benefits Are The Same
The benefits of having braces applied as an adult are the same as with a teen. Tooth alignment can help correct malocclusion, make brushing and flossing easier, and give you a healthier looking smile.
Other Factors To Consider
One of the reasons teens get braces is that they haven’t had time to develop oral health issues. Although age in and of itself doesn’t impact how effective braces will be, adults are more likely to contract conditions such as gingivitis, periodontal disease, and bone loss, or have missing teeth, dental implants, or crowns. Generally, orthodontists will recommend seeking treatment for infections before having braces applied, and since brackets can’t be applied to dental implants or dental crowns, there may be certain orthodontic treatment options that aren’t available to you.
