Braces are extremely beneficial for anyone with misaligned teeth. Not only do they help improve your smile and boost self-confidence, but they have enormous health benefits including creating an even bite and making your teeth easier to clean. However, many people wonder how teeth can be cleaned effectively while braces are on. In this blog, we’ll take a look at preventing cavities, staining, gum disease, and generally, promoting good oral health while braces are on. If you have any questions, be sure to contact us today to speak with an orthodontist.

Consider Your Options

First and foremost, it should be noted that traditional braces aren’t your only option. If you are concerned that you may not be able to maintain your oral health while braces are on, you may want to consider something like Invisalign which allows you to remove the aligners whenever needed in order to brush your teeth, floss, or use mouthwash. With Invisalign, it’s much easier to maintain your oral health and prevent staining on the teeth. On the other hand, you could opt for something like Lingual Braces where the brackets and wires attach to the back of the teeth. Staining won’t be an issue with Lingual Braces, but you’ll still need to worry about the increased risk of cavities and gum disease.

Don’t Forget Flossing

Just because flossing is more difficult with braces on doesn’t mean you should avoid it. Although it may take you a little extra time each day to floss, plan on putting the time aside to floss twice a day. Flossing will help you to clean around the brackets and cover any area on the tooth that you couldn’t reach by brushing.

Use A Mouthwash

Although mouthwash is by no means a replacement for brushing or flossing, it can definitely be helpful for dislodging any remaining food particles or killing any bad bacteria left over after brushing and flossing. Also, if you’re on the go a lot, mouthwash can be a convenient way to clean your mouth after a meal or freshen your breath.

Avoid Foods That Stain

In order to avoid staining on your teeth, you’re going to want to avoid things like coffee, soda, tomato sauce, and fruit like blueberries that are known for staining. As much as possible, try to replace these foods with other options. In order to avoid cavities and gum disease, you should cut anything sugary out of your diet or limit it severely.

See Your Dentist Regularly

Just because you have braces on doesn’t mean you should stop visiting your dentist. Although dentists don’t specialize in applying braces, they are experienced with caring for your teeth while braces are on. If maintaining your oral health is a concern while braces are on, your dentist may be able to recommend a special toothpaste, mouthwash, or floss designed for braces. If you ever experience tooth pain while braces are on, you should see your dentist first who will be able to tell you if you’ve developed a cavity or gum disease.
