Hello, and welcome back to our blog here at Camilo Riano Orthodontics. This is part two of our blog series about the top seven reasons to visit an orthodontist. Although most people think of only visiting an orthodontist in their teenage years, orthodontists can be a valuable asset to your throughout your entire life from early childhood through adulthood. Keep reading to learn several more reasons to visit an orthodontist and contact Camilo Riano Orthodontics if you have any questions or you’re ready to get started.

Overcrowding or Malocclusion

Overcrowding of the teeth and malocclusion are two of the main orthodontic concerns people have, especially in teenage years when teeth are done moving for the most part. Although not everyone has to get their misaligned teeth fixed, most people choose to get braces because straight teeth look nicer and they’re easier to clean. If you have a severe overbite or underbite, this should also be fixed through orthodontic treatment, not just for aesthetic purposes but because it can put a lot of unnecessary stress on certain teeth which can lead to more dental issues later on in life.

By scheduling an appointment with your orthodontist, they will be able to examine your teeth and see if there is any problem with overcrowding or jaw alignment. Once this has been established, you can move forward with treatment based on your wants and needs.

Checkups

If you already have braces, you’ll need to visit the orthodontist regularly in order to check up on your progress as well as to tighten the braces. Generally, orthodontist appointments are scheduled every five to eight weeks. However, frequency of appointments will depend on the patient’s schedule and the individual needs of each patient. It can also depend on what type of orthodontic treatment you’re using, so be sure to speak with your orthodontist to set up a plan.

Broken Brackets Or Wires

If you’re experiencing a broken bracket or wire, don’t wait until your next checkup to have it fixed. Contact your orthodontist office immediately to set up an appointment to have it fixed. There are several reasons you don’t want to leave brackets or wires when they’re broken. First of all, they could poke you causing discomfort or injury. They can break further if they aren’t fixed right away, and most importantly, broken brackets or wires aren’t doing anything for you. If you leave them like that, it may increase the amount of time you have to wear braces before getting them off.

Getting Retainers

After you get your braces off, you’ll need to schedule an appointment to get your retainers fitted. And even after they are, you may need to schedule several more checkups so that your orthodontist can ensure they’re working as intended. This process varies from practice to practice, so be sure to talk to your orthodontist about how this will work.
