One of the things we hear a lot in our office is “I wish I hadn’t waited so long!” Patients are thrilled that our orthodontist in San Francisco CA can help them achieve the smile that they’ve always wanted, and they love their new smile so much that they end up wishing they’d started the process years ago. So why do people put off getting braces? There may be a lot of reasons, but the most common comes down to money.

Braces often feel like an extravagance, especially if they are for your adult teeth. After all, you’ve lived this long with your current smile, so what are a few more decades? But even if the braces are for your children, how you are going to pay for them can be a concern. People have heard horror stories over the years about the cost of braces, but we can tell you that the times have changed. There are a number of things that you can do to help keep your costs lost and make getting braces for yourself or your child more affordable.

How to Keep the Cost of Braces Low

Schedule a free consultation.

Most orthodontists, including Camilo Riano Orthodontics, offers free consultations for new patients. This is a great opportunity to learn more about options for straightening your teeth without spending a penny. During your free consultation, you’ll go through a comprehensive examination with an orthodontist. They’ll look at the current state of your teeth and talk to you about the goals that you have for your smile. Then, they’ll talk to you about your options. This will be your chance to ask questions and get more information about all of the options available to you. And since you won’t have to pay for the consultation, there is zero risk in making the appointment and learning more.

Consider all of the options.

After your initial consultation, take time to think about and research all of your options. There is a good chance that your orthodontist told you about several treatments that you may have heard about before; it’s time to do some research. Look up more information about the various treatment options, whether it’s traditional metal braces or more advanced hidden braces options. You can also talk to the orthodontal team about the cost of each treatment and take that into consideration for your final decision. It’s a good opportunity to look at your budget, as well, and look for room within it for the affordable monthly payments.

Take care of your braces.

When you’ve chosen the method that’s right for you, you can help continue to keep your costs low by taking care of your braces. No matter which method you use, maintenance and care will now be an important part of your daily routine. Not only will this help you achieve the smile that you want as efficiently as possible, you won’t have to pay for repairs or replacement of your equipment.

How to Make Braces More Affordable

Check on your dental insurance.

Take time to check on your current health insurance policies and see if they have any dental insurance included with them. Some people find that when they look at their benefits, they actually signed up for dental insurance with their current employer and forgot that they had it, so it’s worth going over your benefits to see what resources are there for you to use. If you don’t have dental insurance but know that you are going to need braces in the future, consider signing up for it during your company’s open enrollment period (if your dental work can wait until then!).

Look at financing options.

Sometimes the dental insurance doesn’t cover all of the cost of braces or other orthodontal work. In these cases, you might want to look at financing options that can make it more affordable. Financing helps you break down the cost of the treatment into more affordable monthly payments, so you can slowly pay for your braces over time. Talk to your dental office about what financing options they have available; we use Care Credit and have had a lot of success getting patients successfully financed for the treatments they need.

Talk to your orthodontist’s financial office.

Always take time to talk to the financial team at your orthodontist’s office. They are on the front lines of insurance and financing and they may be able to give you valuable advice on how to pay for those braces without emptying your savings account. There are other options out there including using a pre-tax health saving account, dental credit cards, and more. Don’t assume you have no options until you talk to the office team first. They may be able to help point you in the direction of a solution that works with your budget and your credit!
