Maintaining healthy gums is a very important part of oral health. When we’re young, we’re taught to always brush, but that’s only half the story. Your gums protect the roots of your teeth and all other periodontal functions that keep your teeth strong and healthy. Although brushing and avoiding sugary foods is a great way to keep them healthy, that’s only half the story. In this blog, we’re going to look at some of the top foods you can eat to keep your gums healthy.

Leafy Greens

Green vegetables are great for the gums and are filled with vitamins and minerals. One of the most important components of leafy greens is vitamin C which can reduce inflammation and increase the production of red blood cells. The texture of leafy greens is also really good for the gums. Since it’s high in fiber, just chewing it will cause you to produce more saliva and wipe away bacteria on the teeth and gums.

Citrus Fruit

Citrus fruit like oranges, lemon, and lime are great for your gums. Since they contain vitamin C like leafy greens, they will help prevent inflammation and increase the production of red blood cells. However, make sure you’re careful to not brush or eat any crunchy food after eating a citrus fruit. The acid in this fruit actually temporarily breaks down the enamel on your teeth and can be damaged if they’re brushed immediately after.

Onions

Although onions aren’t great for the breath, they can work wonders for the gums. Since onions neutralize bacteria, they’re seen as a very great food for the gums. It also targets bacteria that is commonly known to cause both cavities and gum disease. For an added benefit, try adding it to your salad for an extra gum healthy boost.

Dairy Products

Of course, dairy products are great for the gums because they’re great for your teeth! Dairy products are high in calcium that helps strengthen bone and can wash out a lot of the dangerous bacteria, plaque, and tartar in your mouth. There’s also a protein called casein in dairy products that will work to neutralize oral acids. The great thing about dairy products is that you can find them just about everywhere. Most people drink milk every day but you can also eat yogurt or cheese. Just be sure to avoid anything with sugar. Most yogurts contain sugar nowadays.
